You received your offer of employment, accepted it and now all that is left is resigning from your current employer. This might not be as easy as expected, because what do you do when your employer gives you a tempting offer instead of accepting your letter of resignation?
A few key points to remember before considering the counter-offer
Remember the reason why you wanted to leave
It’s very important to remember why you wanted to leave as you wouldn’t have been looking for a new job if you were happy with your current employer.
As experience show, most people who accept counter offers enter the job market again after a few months.
Trust can become problematic
If you stay at your current employer, your management team might perceive you as being disloyal to the company. You will need to work on regaining your employers trust again and in the end you might be in line to lose your job if the company was to restructure.
Don’t burn bridges
If you do not want to accept the counter offer, have a talk with your employer and tell them that even though it was a very difficult decision you are accepting the new offer of employment with the new employer.
Tell your current employer that you are grateful to have worked with them and have gained experience that is invaluable.
